Ojime Coral Lacquered with Scroll Design

This rare Japanese wood and lacquered hand-carved bead is called Ojime. It was made sometime during the Edo Period (1615-1868). The bead has a scroll design with accents of opaque round beads measuring two millimeters. The opaque beads are scattered randomly through-out the design. The bead opening has a brass cylinder with the opening being four millimeters wide. The 14K rose gold chain is sixteen inches long and sold separately. The chain is priced $85.00. The Ojime bead keeps an inro case tightly together. The inro was used as a tinder box usually holding flint and tinder, or it held the owners seal or chop, and later evolved into a medicine case.
